We are in the business of saving teeth at Yulee Family Dentistry because it is the best way to protect the appearance of your smile and your oral health. Sometimes, however, removing a tooth is necessary. We understand that patients have anxiety about how to replace their tooth and some embarrassment about their appearance after tooth loss. We are here to help.
Dr. Jonathan Gordon places a high priority on patient comfort and will make sure you are completely comfortable for your procedure. We can perform most extractions here in our office so you can have treatment without the need to make a trip to a specialist.
Why You May Need an Extraction
When a tooth sustains significant enough decay, you may require an extraction to prevent pain, infection, or putting your other teeth at risk. Because decay only hurts once it is severe, sometimes a painful tooth may have too much decay for a filling or dental crown. Other common reasons patients require extractions include:
Trauma – An accident or severe split may make restoring your tooth impossible.
Infection – A severe infection caused by periodontal disease or an abscess may make treatment impossible.
Orthodontics – For some orthodontic cases, removing teeth may be necessary to achieve an aligned bite.
Overcrowding – Some patients have severe overcrowding that makes caring for their teeth or a comfortable bite impossible.
Pain – Unexplained pain in a tooth despite treatment may result in an extraction in order to bring the patient relief.
Failed root canal therapy – While root canals are most often successful, occasionally it is not enough to save a troubled tooth.
Wisdom teeth –Not all wisdom teeth require extraction. Sometimes, however, they cause pain because they do not grow in properly, they can’t erupt because there is not enough room, or they interfere with the health of other teeth. An evaluation will determine if your wisdom teeth may be problematic.
If you ever experience dental pain or discomfort, it is always best to have your oral health evaluated. Acting quickly may save your tooth!
Dental Extraction Treatment
Patients are often afraid that a dental extraction will be painful. Dr. Gordon takes his time with each patient, making sure the anesthetic takes effect and that you are numb before starting any treatment. We often hear, “That wasn’t so bad!” from our patients, and we love to hear when we made treatment a positive experience for them.
Once we remove your damaged tooth, we will go over how to care for your surgical site while you heal. We will also schedule a follow up visit to ensure you heal properly and to make arrangements to replace your tooth, if necessary.
Our team is friendly and compassionate. We will support you every step of the way, making sure you understand your treatment options and feel confident in your decisions regarding your health before we begin.
