Dental Cleanings and Periodontal Treatment

At Yulee Family Dentistry, we understand that healthy gums are essential to beautiful, comfortable smiles. We customize our dental cleanings to meet each patient’s needs and level of health. We also understand that your health can change throughout your lifetime, and our team adjusts your dental cleanings accordingly so you can achieve and maintain optimum wellness.

Professional Dental Cleanings

Even with exceptional home care habits, your toothbrush and dental floss cannot reach all areas between your teeth and below your gum line. Regular professional dental cleanings allow our hygienists to remove tartar and bacteria, and polish surface stains from your teeth so you leave with that smooth, fresh feeling only a dental cleaning can provide! Our hygienists are gentle, thorough, and love getting to know our patients. They will provide you with a customized dental cleaning designed to keep your gums healthy and your smile looking its best.

In addition to providing gentle and effective dental cleanings, you will find that our hygienists have a wealth of knowledge. If you have experienced a sudden change in the health of your gums or need advice about which products work best, home care techniques, or nutrition to keep your teeth and gums healthy, we can help! We welcome your questions and enjoy teaching our patients about ways to achieve a lifelong healthy smile.

Diagnosing Periodontal (Gum) Disease

If you have swollen bleeding gums, bad breath, sore or red gums, tooth mobility, or gum recession, you may suffer from periodontal disease. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 50% of American adults suffer from some level of gum disease. After the age of 65, that statistic rises dramatically.

Researchers have linked gum disease to overall systemic conditions such as heart attacks, stroke, diabetes, and respiratory illnesses, making it a serious risk to many of our patients’ overall health.

When they are healthy, your gums should fit snugly around your teeth and create a seal that keeps out food and bacteria. When your gums become infected, you may develop pockets around your teeth allowing bacteria to reproduce and cause inflammation. We provide each patient with a periodontal evaluation so we can determine the health of your gums and give you the best care possible.

Periodontal Treatment

With regular dental care, periodontal disease is a highly treatable condition. In its early stages, we can often reverse the disease entirely with a series of thorough dental cleanings. Once you have gum disease, you will always be more susceptible to it, so staying on schedule with your professional cleanings and exams is important.

We may recommend dental cleanings three to four times per year in order to keep your gums infection-free. Each patient is different and your needs may change with pregnancy, certain medical conditions, and as you age. Dr. Jonathan Gordon will discuss the treatment that will work best for you so you can make a good decision regarding your dental health.
